🚀 Project Overview: The Problem
Many data professionals lose valuable time collecting and preparing datasets. Dealing with raw HTML and writing repetitive cleaning scripts for each new data source is a tedious process. To solve this, I developed WebToTable, an automated pipeline that seamlessly extracts, cleans, analyzes, and exports tabular web data directly from the browser, eliminating the need for manual script configuration.
🏗️ The Development Journey
This application evolved through three main phases to ensure maximum efficiency and scalability:
- Static Prototype: Initially built as a hardcoded script to test core scraping logic and DataFrame manipulation.
- Dynamic CLI Engine: Upgraded to a command-line interface, allowing manual URL inputs and interactive terminal-based cleaning.
- Interactive Web App: Fully migrated to a reactive graphical interface using Streamlit, making the engine accessible globally as a web application.
✨ Core Features & Cleaning Mechanics
After the backend successfully locates standard HTML tables, the data goes through a robust cleaning process:
- Strict Cleaning: A feature that drops rows containing missing values (NaN) to guarantee complete records.
- Intelligent Imputation: Automatically handles missing data based on column types—filling numeric gaps with averages or zeros, and text gaps with null values.
- Data Profiling: Provides real-time statistical summaries and data type structures.
- Universal Export: Users can download the processed data in ready-to-use formats like CSV, Excel, JSON, Dict, HDF5, and LaTeX.
⚠️ Technical Limitations
The tool specifically targets standard HTML table structures and cannot process data hidden within complex nested div grids. Furthermore, dynamically loaded content requiring client-side JavaScript execution (like React or Angular pages) is currently beyond the scope of its static HTTP requests.
